2021年の東京オリンピック開会式で歌舞伎役者の市川海老蔵氏が演じた、歌舞伎十八番のひとつで、罪もない男女が悪人に捕らえられ、殺されようとしたときに、「暫（しばらく）」という掛け声とともに現れる正義のヒーローが、悪人をこらしめる豪快で勇壮な内容の「暫（しばらく）」をテーマにした壁画です。
この作品では、成田屋色を使いつつ、伝統的な色の組み合わせだけではなく、未来的なポップカラー使用し、ローマ数字 「MMXXI」は2021、顔の近くの「XI」のは市川海老蔵氏の11代目の意味合いが入っています。
Since Plaza Walls Mural Festival pieces only last a year, I wanted to paint something that was very specific to 2021. So I chose the very special moment during the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony in August when the iconic Kabuki play “Shibaraku” had a surprise performance! Nobody knew it was going to happen, so you can imagine how excited we were when we heard the famous lines ringing out from the darkened stage!
Most people were fixated on the lettering in this mural, which is 2021 in Roman numerals. I chose to use Roman Numerals because:
– They seem instantly representative of the West, combined dynamically with the Japanese element, like the spirit of the Tokyo Olympics.
– Conveniently, the famous actor Ichikawa Ebizo who performed this play is the 11th in his generation to bear his name… which is why the XI part near his face is outlined in a different color than the rest.
I chose a pop color scheme for this piece, pushing the boundary of the traditional colors (for example the red face stripes.) I just wanted it to have a truly 2021 feel and even hearken to very modern art forms like NFTs.

JUURI
1983年東京都町田市生まれ。2006年 Northeastern State University (Oklahoma, USA) グラフィックデザイン学科卒業。アメリカのオクラホマ州を拠点に壁画制作や絵画作品の発表、オリジナルファッション商品のデザインなど国内外で様々な活動を展開。伝統的な日本の人物とモダンなポップモチーフを組み合わせ、混沌とした世界に時代を超えた平和と慰めの感覚を伝えたい。Omni Hotels, Hilton Hotels, Netflix productionsなど数多くのコラボレーションでも活躍。
JUURI is a Tokyo-born Japanese+American artist currently working from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Her colorful figure-driven work is inspired by traditional Japanese art interpreted through a modern fashion photography feel. She often references Japanese history, folklore, or kabuki plays as recurring themes.
JUURI’s murals and art can be seen all over the US as well as overseas. Her clients include hospitality, urban renewal initiatives, and high caliber international collectors.
